You read that right. Because I talked to a medical professional about what it is, how it works, and if I was a candidate for the diet. I know this diet is not for everybody. If you don’t agree with this diet I’m okay with that, but I prefer not to be judged for my decision to try it. Please keep comments positive. Feel free to ask questions. And please, if you have any tips or recipes to share, I’m all ears! What Is the 5. 00 Calorie Diet? The 5. 00 calorie diet is sometimes referred to the HCG diet. The 5. 00 calorie diet is normally done with the HCG diet, though it can be done separately. With the 5. 00 calorie diet, you restrict your caloric intake to 5. No sugar, no fats (not even good ones), no starches, no alcohol, no treats. It can be safe to do as long as you don’t do it for more than 4. So you’ll supposedly get a muscle- toned body that sheds weight at a reported average of 1 pound per day for men, and about 1/2 pound a day for women. You take the HCG daily via a pill or injectible. Some people just do just the 5. HCG with it as well. Here I’m discussing ONLY the 5. What Does the 5. 00 Calorie Diet Consist Of? As you can imagine, it’s not super fun. For breakfast you can have tea (I drink green tea which is known to help encourage weight loss) or coffee. No sugar, no cream. You can have a tablespoon total of low- fat milk daily. Lunch and dinner include 1. I don’t even eat the breadstick anymore. Meats are limited to lean beef, chicken breast, veal, white fish, shrimp, crab or lobster, while vegetables are limited to spinach, cabbage, chard, tomatoes, onions, fennel, radishes, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, mushrooms, green beans, asparagus and green salads. For your fruit, you can choose from an apple, orange, half of a grapefruit or a handful of strawberries. Tips: You aren’t supposed to have the same meat, veggies, or fruit twice a day. So if you have chicken and asparagus for lunch, don’t have it again for dinner. It’s acceptable to have your fruit separately from your meat and veggies. I usually have mine mid- morning and as a dessert after dinner. You also shouldn’t mix fruits, however you can mix veggies. So you can mix mushrooms, onions, and asparagus together, but not strawberries and apples. I will say that I have mixed berries together with no problem. If you mix and experience a weight stall or gain, don’t do it again. A lot of this is trial and error based on how your body reacts. The most important thing about the 5. Drink a TON of water. At least a gallon a day, especially during the summer. You can wake up your water with this simple recipes. I have just completed my first 2. I lost almost 1. 4 pounds and 9 inches in my chest, waist, hips, and thighs. Today is Day 2. 2. The first week sucks. You’ll be detoxing from sugar and junk food, and you will be miserable to be around. You’ll be starving. You’ll reconsider what you are doing. I was told Days 3- 6 are the worst, and they were. But stick with it because you’ll feel better soon, promise. You might stink. Gross, I know. Nobody told me this one! You may notice bad body odor and bad breath. It’s all of that detoxing you’re doing! I asked Jason if he could smell it, and he couldn’t. Maybe your sense of smell is heightened as well, I don’t know. But the body odor does go away. The bad breath sticks around. Chew gum, make sure it’s sugar- free gum. I have been chewing this Sugar Free Chewing Gum Sweetened with Xylitol Peppermint and really like it. You’ll be bored. It’s hard to eat only a very limited menu and not be able to eat what everybody else is eating. You may even want to become a hermit and avoid social settings where people are eating and drinking and being merry. I’ve tried to hang out (4th of July sucked – I couldn’t eat anything at our get together), and it’s really hard. You can’t cheat at all. If you cheat with sugar, fat, or starches, you’re taking 2 steps back. I prefer hot veggies over salads. The first almost 2 weeks I tried to eat a salad with meat and either balsamic vinegar or lemon squeezed on it. I got burnt out on salads quickly. So now for lunch I fry a piece of chicken or turkey burger with some veggies. It takes a bit longer, but it’s worth it. Seasonings are your friend. You need to church things up. Just make sure whatever spices and seasonings you use are sugar- free. Try veggies and meat with Bragg’s liquid aminos (it taste kind of like soy sauce), use Frank’s hot sauce and Tabasco, and use garlic and onions for flavor. Stevia and flavored liquid stevia (my favorite flavors are the Vanilla Cream and Coconut) in place of sugar. They aren’t cheap, but you only use a few drops at a time so they last forever. Sugar- free doesn’t necessarily mean sugar- free just because the label says so. Brands hide sugar under different names like maltose, maltodextrin, and sucrose to name a few. Here’s a list of the 5. Make sure you are checking label ingredients! You’ll get sick of eating plain meat with just seasonings on it, so get creative. Branch out and try new things. Jason and I LOVED these lean curry burgers that we served over spinach with a side of lemon cucumbers. The recipe calls for garam masala, and I have a recipe for it here. This clean eating un- stuffed bell peppers recipe (minus the corn and cheese) is a favorite, too. Use chicken broth in place of the coconut oil. And this berry salad (minus the chocolate chips!) is amazing as well. There are also a ton of recipe boards for this diet on Pinterest. I’ll be sharing some recipes, too. You shouldn’t exercise on this diet! I’m totally not making this up. You won’t have energy for a big workout, and if you do, you’re body will go into starvation mode trying to store all of the fat and calories it has. A short walk or light yoga is fine, but anything else is no bueno. I’ve recently fallen in love with yoga and the peace and calmness it brings with it. It’s been very helpful to me these last 2. You might stop losing, or even gain, weight. Water retention due to the heat, your monthly period, or cheating will all lead to a weight loss stall. If you have a weight loss stall for more than a few days, there’s a couple things you can do: Do an “apple day” where you only eat 6 apples from lunch one day to lunch the next. I did, and wasn’t hungry, but was sick of apples. My sister preferred a steak day. You don’t eat anything until dinner and have one very big lean steak. That’s it. We both experienced weight loss the following morning after trying both things. You won’t be hungry. Okay, you might occasionally get hungry, but for the most part you’ll be satisfied. I was much more hungry during the days before I started this diet when all I did was eat crap all the time. When you do experience hunger pangs, drink more water. Chew some gum. Eat a zero calorie food (like celery). Do something to take your mind off of it. And I think this goes without saying: you will need support. Find a friend who’s also dieting or join a group on Facebook. I was lucky enough to have my sister doing it with me for the first 2. Since I’m doing another 2. I still have her because she’s done it twice and knows how difficult it is. Jason has been a huge support, too. He’s been eating with me, though he’s not necessarily following the diet. And my family and friends have been my cheerleaders. But I also know it works. My sister did this diet back in January and lost close to 2. She also did it with me again over the last 2. I can tell you I’m sleeping better, my allergies aren’t as bad, I feel better overall, my blood pressure is normal (I had high blood pressure), I’m not as moody, and I’m not craving crap. It seems someone with some aesthetic taste is coming in and teaching the big boys like Currie, Pedego, and Prodeco- Tech how good a bike can look at only 1/6th of the price of what they offer. Seems too good to true. But I soon realized that the snazzy looking prototype in the photo with sweet anodized components is not at all the fat electric bike I will be getting. Never has there been this much attention on an electric bike in the mass press. I would boldly state that this is the best selling electric bike of all time. He has proven that thousands of people want ebikes and are willing to pay for it right now. The first point is he probably can’t. I personally don’t see how he can offer a bike at $5. Starting with the 5. The Sonders bike has 3. V / 1. 0- Ah battery pack, 3. It has a cheap inexpensive motor. A more realistic estimate on a bike like this is 1. Read our article on calculating range. Also the Sonders team claimed the bike weighed only 4. Sonders Ebike, it actually weighed in at 5. The other great exaggeration is the speed you can expect. The test bike is obviously burning a lot more than 3. The 2. 0- MPH top speed is far- fetched, given the 3. It is misleading to let the press and potential buyers to ride around on a prototype bike that was pumping out 4. X as much power as the production bike will have. It is easily proven that the prototype electric bike is “souped up”. Pictures have been released of the prototype bike with a Cycle Analyst on board. It will have the same basic structure, wide tires etc. Obviously, the bike would be a lot lighter if it was made from aluminum (which would be more expensive than steel). The 3 key components to this Ebike. Sonders bike. Forget riding in the sand or doing any real off road riding. There has been a lot of skepticism about Sonders and this campaign. You can read this long Endless- sphere thread with a lot of facts mixed in with a lot of speculation here. Why Insurance? For this campaign, Indiegogo did the totally unprecedented maneuver of offering insurance: “Get your money back if you don’t receive your Sondors e. Bike within 3 months after the estimated delivery date. Insurance provided by Indiegogo”This makes the bike way less of a gamble. Getting to the Real Price. So the bike now costs $6. Things Are Looking Good. The good news is if you bought into the Sonders ebike, and bought it at the $5. Here is an article about those changes. Indigogo stepped up with an optional $1. Sonders has really seemed to come through on his end with keeping backers updated with pictures and blog posts from him on the production lines in China, Supposedly right on target to meet his May 1st deadline. Would I Buy One? Honestly if I could go pick one of these up tomorrow at a store somewhere for $5. I would go buy it. I think the bike looks really good and is a great value for the money. I would test ride it. I would buy it. But given the waiting time, the gamble, the shipping costs, and the insurance. Notice the Fat motor in the Fat front wheel to put out Fat power. Preparing for Your Commute to Work It's important to prepare for a consistent active commute to work in order to be successful. Strategies to get the most from your pedal power, reduce your risk of injury and be ready for work takes just a bit of planning. However, once you have a routine in place, it becomes second nature and you'll reap great health rewards. Like any other time you're out riding, be sure to bring the equipment needed to repair a flat tire. Using your bike consistently throughout the week may mean you'll need to do maintenance more frequently. Keeping your chain clean of excess dirt and grime will ensure the bike shifts more easily. When your wheels are aligned and tires inflated, the ride is easier and the brakes work more smoothly. By shifting your bike gears when they aren't under hard resistance, such as pedaling up hill, you'll reduce wear and tear on the shifter. You have to pedal while shifting, but can ease off a bit as you shift up or down. Biking to work will mean it's more important to keep track of the weather, both for the commute in and back home. Driving home in the rain isn't nearly as challenging as riding in to work in a storm. Keep an eye on the weather reports and have a contingency plan if the weather is too inclement to ride. Riding to work will likely mean you need a place to lock up your bike and take a quick shower before getting to your desk. For example you might have one plate of a cucumber dish, one of corn & carrots, and then another with ribs. If you wanted one night to have diced potatoes, chicken, and eggplant that would also be okay. We were not fans of vegetables before either, but find a few dishes that your whole family loves and rotate those. Trust us. Cut down on your meat & dairy. We eat very little meat. Most Chinese eat very little meat because it is expensive. We have opted out of eating lots of meat because it isn’t the main course of a Chinese diet and that is what we wanted. We found that meat is actually harder on the digestive system than we ever thought. After a night of heavy meat eating we all feel a little more lethargic. If you love meat, then don’t cut down too much, but be conscience of how much meat you are eating versus veggies. If you are worried about the nutritional aspect of it make sure you introduce different protein dishes that are not meat. There are tons out there. We eat very little dairy. It was hard at first coming from the cheese head state of Wisconsin. Cut it down and try to limit it to eggs, milk and yogurt. You will be surprised at how awesome you will start feeling. Use chopsticks to eat. You don’t know how to use them. Well watch this little tutorial and then practice away. Remember practice makes perfect, JUST DO IT! We love eating with chopsticks and wonder why we didn’t use them more at home. They are so cheap to buy and are actually lots of fun once you get going. Our 4 year old Lupita now eats all of her food with chopsticks too and she is left handed. You eat a lot slower, A LOT. I still have seen people shovel food with chopsticks so I know it can be done, but for most of us it is a lot harder to do so. Introduce rice and noodles into your meals. A Chinese diet includes a lot of rice and noodles. So our daily diet is no different, we eat rice and noodles 3 times a day. We have grown to love it. We feel like our meal isn’t complete if we don’t have some. White rice and white noodles is the color of choice. The Chinese actually feel that brown rice is in the same category as the plague, they avoid it at all costs and find it a bit insulting. What about all of the calories and the carbs in white rice? These people have been eating it for thousands of years and look better, live longer, and are healthier than anyone else. So I will trust them and stick with my WHITE rice. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken! Eat your left overs – don’t waste food or the money you spent on it. The Chinese know how to recycle and reuse things like no other society I have ever experienced. Coming from a consuming/disposing society this has been an eye opener. I will admit I really don’t enjoy left overs. I am not sure where my hatred for yesterday’s food comes from, but it has been there for sometime. Now we don’t make enough food to feed an army, we just make enough and if there are some left overs they don’t turn gross in the fridge over night. I am guessing it is because there isn’t pounds of butter or grease so the food looks very similar to what it did the day before. We rarely throw out food. Don’t deprive yourself of everything – just don’t gobble it. Don’t think that we just sit around eating carrots and celery all day and that is how we lost all of our weight. We eat food we crave and love too. I am a sucker for a coke and a snickers bar. I don’t want to know how many calories are in there or how many carbohydrates. But I have one of my power pick me up doses about twice a week at least. Some afternoons I feel like I just need a little something to get me through the day and I run down to the convenience store and pick up my little snack. We crave Mc. Donald’s and so do our kids, so about once a week we have our American treat. We either choose Mc. Donald’s or KFC. It is much more expensive to eat MCD’s here than it is in the US, so that keeps us away too. We do not deprive ourselves and feel bad about eating some food that we know is extremely bad for us. Anyone knows that depriving yourself of the little joys in life will only throw you off the wagon sooner. Don’t keep a stocked pantry of snacks or “just in case food”We come from a family that keeps food around in case the Apocalypse comes or maybe the next group of teenage boys. The problem with keeping all sorts of yummy food around is that you eat it when you aren’t suppose to. You might have will power, but we don’t!! Especially Zeek, he will go and snack on just about anything he can dig up at 1. So we have eliminated having snacks around all together. If you have kids you know that they can and want to eat many more snacks than we do. Remember, you are teaching them their eating habits now. When their metabolism dies like ours has they will begin to pack on the pounds and not know why. This is the time to teach them about healthy eating and snacking habits. Everyone in China I encounter grabs an apple or some yummy fruit to snack on. That is considered their sweet, good food for thought. Don’t use too many bottled spices, natural spices are best and really are all that you need. This might sound odd, but it is true. We use to have about 3. I admit that I didn’t know how to properly use 2. In our Chinese diet we use about 4 or five different spices in total. They are ginger, garlic, oyster sauce, chives, and soy sauce. The ginger, garlic and chives are cut freshly and put into the dishes. Why not use fresh seasons if you can. We believe it has helped with bringing out the natural flavor of our food and made all of our veggies extra yummy. Yup that is it!! No insane pills or equipment to buy, just a little common sense really. How can you not love it! It might sound just too easy, but we are living proof that it works.
